We, unaccustomed to courage
exiles from delight
live coiled in shells of loneliness
until love leaves its high holy temple
and comes into our sight
to liberate us into life.
Love arrives
and in its train come ecstasies
old memories of pleasure
ancient histories of pain.
Yet if we are bold,
love strikes away the chains of fear
from our souls.
We are weaned from our timidity
In the flush of love's light
we dare be brave
And suddenly we see
that love costs all we are
and will ever be.
Yet it is only love
which sets us free.”
― Maya Angelou
Today is a surreal milestone for me. I don't know why having my youngest turn 5 feels like the equivalent of what turning 50 must be like. But what I do know is that my children have indeed taught me that "love costs all we are and will ever be. Yet it is only love which sets us free." Happy 5th Birthday to my Ashton Joseph Brinkman Flynn.
Welcome to the world, little one! |

I love that poem, especially the last sentence. Ashton is such a wonderful boy. Full of energy, intelligence, excitement and sweetness. I'm glad he's my grandson! And I love those enormous brown eyes?
Wow! Those eyes DO look like Junior Mints! I'm certainly feeling some of my own bittersweet feelings as my youngest reaches certain milestones.
...the days are long but the years are short...
